The Carrefour de l'Arbre is the last difficult
section of more than 50km of paved roads in the 260km plus Paris-Roubaix
cycling classic nicknamed "The Hell of the North".
Thousands of people line the course to watch the cyclists "suffer" on the cobbles. For ever rider just finishing is an honour, the 1919 winner said; "This wasn't a race. It was a pilgrimage."
